Straw, a vibrant material

Presented in Hamburg, Steinway & Sons unveils a new limited-edition series of pianos created in collaboration with Studio Paelis, the studio founded by Manon Bouvier-Toth, a French Meilleur Ouvrier de France. The collaboration brings together fine craftsmanship and contemporary design, introducing rye straw marquetry into the world of luxury piano making.

This partnership marks a first for Steinway & Sons, incorporating the ancestral decorative craft of straw marquetry into selected elements of the piano, including the inner lid and the music desk. Known for its naturally golden reflections and luminous texture, straw marquetry lends the instruments a sculptural and refined dimension.

Originating in Europe in the early 17th century, the technique consists of carefully opening, flattening and assembling strands of straw to create graphic compositions with distinctive light effects. Historically associated with precious furniture and exceptional decorative objects, straw marquetry is now experiencing a contemporary revival through studios reinterpreting the craft for modern design.

Founded in Lyon in 2016, Studio Paelis has become one of the leading studios contributing to this renewed interest in straw marquetry. The atelier develops bespoke creations for the luxury, design and interiors sectors, exploring the architectural and visual possibilities of the material.

For this limited edition, two decorative concepts were developed. Classic Sunburst features a radiant composition inspired by the sun, while Concentric Waves evokes the movement and propagation of sound through fluid circular patterns. Both designs visually translate the musicality of the piano while highlighting the rich tonal qualities of straw.

Beyond the object itself, the collaboration reflects a broader movement within contemporary design: the dialogue between heritage houses and traditional crafts. By combining artisanal expertise, natural materials and refined aesthetics, Steinway & Sons and Studio Paelis present a vision of luxury rooted in craftsmanship, precision and timeless savoir-faire. •
